Building the Future: Practical Strategies to address Affordable Housing
This year we will highlight the revolutionary work of affordable housing practitioners who are breaking down the silos and integrating sustainability and affordable housing; reviewing practices and finance structures for affordable home ownership; exploring tools to further understand zoning practices; and understanding the newest case law and decisions regarding the use of community preferencing. The Summit will bring together elected officials, housing and community development leaders, financial lenders, business professionals, activists and others to identify and work toward affordable housing solutions. The Summit will invite us all to imagine how we build a housing future for all.

In collaboration with the and other regional partners, ̨ÍåSWAGUniversity’s Land Use Law Center will bring a unique training program to municipalities within the Finger Lakes and North Country. The curriculum for this program will be comprehensive, addressing key topics such as the land use system; dynamics between local and state authority; planning and regulatory techniques that balance clean energy development and the protection of natural resources, agricultural lands and other local and state resources; and public engagement and consensus building tools which participants can use to engage nontraditional and traditional audiences in their communities.

The program will be offered free of charge and participants will receive reimbursement for vehicle miles traveled. Additionally, continuing legal education credits for attorneys can be provided. The program also satisfies the training requirement for local board members. CM credits for planners and credits for code enforcement officers are also being considered. In addition, the Center will provide a high-level assessment of each participating community’s land use plans and regulations that identifies any existing clean energy efforts.

The program comprises three full-day sessions. The program includes breakfast, lunch and snacks. The program will also include one or more off site visits to projects or sites in the region; additional travel and logistics details will be shared in advance of the program.

The program will include information about the , which provides best practices for adopting onsite clean energy technologies in your municipality.

The program serves more as a land use retreat for local land use leaders to brainstorm, vision, and proactively plan for their community’s future. It is a requirement that participating individuals attend all three of the sessions to complete the program.

Announcing a new training opportunity for municipalities working on local flood resilience!

This spring, the Hudson River Watershed Alliance and ̨ÍåSWAGUniversity’s Land Use Law Center are bringing the award-winning Land Use Leadership Alliance (LULA) training program to municipalities that are Members of the .

This 3-day training teaches local leaders how to develop sound and balanced strategies to accomplish policy objectives and to carry them out effectively. The content for this training will focus specifically on land use, flood resilience, and climate change adaptation.

The Land Use Law Center will also provide participating municipalities with resilience assessments using the , developed by FEMA and EPA. The RISE assessment reviews a municipality's current zoning and comprehensive plan language. This LULA program will be particularly well-suited for municipalities that are interested in or are currently working on a Comprehensive Plan or Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan.

Once your municipality is a Member of the Flood Resilience Network, we will share the municipal application form to participate in the LULA training. The application process will help us identify a cohort of communities that are well-positioned to use the RISE Local Assessment Tool for this session.
